Before you even spawn in, check your hardware. Trying to run this on a potato means choppy frames and input lag – basically, you’ll die, and it won’t even be your fault.
System Requirements and Device Optimization
Android minimum specs:
- OS: Android 10 (64-bit)
- RAM: 4GB
- GPU: Adreno 610 / 2-core Mali-G52 (Vulkan support is a must)
- CPU: Snapdragon 665 / Mediatek Helio P65
iOS minimum:
- Device: iPhone 6S or newer
- OS: version 15 or higher
Keep in mind, these are the bare minimums. If your phone is on the weaker side, it’s going to heat up fast. Once that thermal throttling kicks in, your frame rate will tank right when the bullets start flying.
Playing on PC via Emulator
If you want a bigger screen and better control, BlueStacks and LDPlayer are the way to go. Here’s the quick setup for BlueStacks:
- Grab the installer from the official BlueStacks site.
- Run the setup and log into your Google Play account.
- Search for War Thunder Mobile and hit install.
- Use the keymapping tool to set up your mouse and keyboard. Getting your aim and zoom on a mouse feels way more natural.
LDPlayer 9 is also a great shout – a lot of players swear by its keymapping when they need precise turret control.
PC Requirements:
- Windows 7+
- Intel or AMD CPU
- 4GB RAM (don’t even bother with 2GB)
- 5GB free space
Making it Run Smooth
Two things kill your performance: old drivers and heat. Update everything before you start grinding. If you’re playing on mobile, grab a phone cooler. They’re cheap and keep your frames stable during long sessions. Graphics aren’t just for looks; they’re tactical. Crank the settings as high as your device can handle. High settings make it way easier to spot a tank hiding in the brush. If things get laggy, drop the texture quality and draw distance first, but keep that resolution up.
Essential Settings and Controls
Most players jump straight in and wonder why they’re getting cooked. Your settings are just as important as your aim.
Audio
Don’t ignore this. Kill the music and UI sounds. Turn engine and track noises all the way up. You’ll hear an enemy tank coming around a corner long before you see them. It’s basically a legal wallhack that most newbies ignore.
Button Layout
The default layout is usually trash. Go into the menu and move the buttons to where your thumbs actually sit. Make sure your fire, zoom, and movement buttons are easy to hit. If you aren’t fighting the controls, your reaction time will double.
Sensitivity
You need a balance here:
- Sniping: 0.5 – 0.7 sensitivity for those tiny adjustments.
- Brawling: 0.8 – 1.0 so you can actually track someone circling you.
The “Must-Have” Toggles
Change these immediately:
- Track Target (Auto): This is your aim assist. Most pros keep this on because it helps your gun stay glued to moving targets.
- Auto Zoom on Target: Enable this. It works with the tracking to make aiming feel much smoother.
- Show Grass in Tank Sight: Turn this OFF. Grass looks nice, but it blocks your view in sniper mode. There’s zero reason to keep it on.
- Crew Autohealing: Turn this OFF. If this is on, your tank will stop dead in its tracks to heal a crew member. Usually, this happens right in the middle of a crosswalk. Disable it and heal manually when you’re actually safe behind a rock.
Movement and Joystick
Arrows are usually better for precision, especially for quick reverses. If you stick with the joystick, make it small. You want to hit full speed with minimal thumb movement. Also, switch to Alternative controls. The default mode makes turns feel sluggish because it doesn’t manage engine power well. Alternative mode keeps your speed up through corners, and you’ll feel the difference instantly.
The Minimap
Make it huge. Max out the minimap size. You’ll usually spot an enemy icon on the map before you see the actual tank on your screen. It tells you where the threats are and which caps are being flipped – watch it constantly.
Getting Started: The First Matches
Do the “Tank Control Basis” and “Tank Gunnery” tutorials. They give you free currency and teach you how shell arcs work. Don’t skip them.
Start in Arcade
Arcade is your training ground. You get aim indicators, penetration markers, and boosted engine power. Realistic and Sim modes strip all that away. Stay in Arcade until you know the maps and where to aim.
Ammo Discipline
Here is the golden rule: Never carry full ammo. Ammo racks are explosive. The more shells you carry, the bigger the target inside your tank. If an enemy hits your rack, you’re done. Carry 20 rounds or less. It sounds crazy, but it’ll stop you from exploding the moment someone sneezes in your direction. Also, the “best” penetration shell isn’t always the winner. APCR might have high numbers, but it sucks at long range and bounces off angles. Learn your shell types.
Choosing Your Nation
- USA: The best all-rounder. Good armor, good guns, and stabilizers that let you shoot while moving. Very forgiving for new players.
- Germany: Glass cannons early on. The guns are incredible and can punch through almost anything, but your armor won’t save you if you stand in the open.
- USSR: Sloped armor masters. Their tanks bounce shots that would delete anyone else. They’re tough, have fast reloads, and are very beginner-friendly.
- The Others (UK, Japan, Italy, France): These are fun but niche. They usually have a specific gimmick – like France’s thick early armor or Italy’s “all-in” firepower. Save these for later. They punish mistakes way harder than the big three.
Battle Rating (BR) Warning
This is the biggest mistake newbies make. Matchmaking is based on your highest BR vehicle. If you put a 3.0 tank in a lineup with 1.0 tanks, you’re going to be fighting 3.0 enemies with starter gear. Keep your lineup within 0.3 – 0.5 BR of each other.
Core Combat Tips
Positioning is Everything
Flat ground is a graveyard. Use hills, ruins, and dead tanks for cover. Always angle your hull. Presenting a flat front to an enemy is just asking to be sent back to the hangar.
Weak Spots
Don’t just spray and pray. Aim for:
- Lower front plate: Usually the thinnest part of the front.
- Sides and Rear: Paper thin. One shot here usually ends it.
- Gun Barrel: If you can’t kill them, break their gun. They can’t shoot back if their barrel is orange.
Peek-Shoot-Move
This is the rhythm of the game. Peek out, take your shot, and immediately reverse. Don’t sit there waiting to see if you hit. If you missed, the enemy is already aiming at you. Move, reset, and try a different angle.
Shell Choice
- APCBC: Your bread and butter. Good pen and explodes inside.
- APCR: Use this for the really thick stuff you can’t crack, but it doesn’t do much damage once it gets inside.
- HE: Only for trucks and open-top vehicles. It’ll do nothing to a heavy tank.
Currency and Grinding
Gold Eagles
Don’t waste these. Earn them through daily logins (watch the ad to double it!) and the battle pass. Use them for Premium Account time. It’s the only thing actually worth the money because it doubles your progress across the board.
Silver Lions
You’ll need these for everything. Don’t buy them with Gold – the exchange rate is a rip-off. Just play the game and watch the bonus ads after a match to pad your wallet.
Final Pro Tip: Don’t Leave Early
Never quit a match if you still have tanks left. You’ll get a “Crew Lock” penalty that prevents you from using those tanks for several minutes. Even if you’re losing, play it out and get the XP.
