War Thunder Naval Crew Skills Guide 2026

War Thunder

Naval crew skills are basically the most ignored part of the game. Most players just dump points wherever, wonder why they’re sinking after three hits, and then complain the game is broken. But honestly? A properly spec’d crew makes your ship way tankier, cuts down repair times, and actually lets you win gunfights. Here’s the breakdown of what actually matters so you stop wasting your points.

How to Actually Get Crew XP

Crew XP modes illustration

You get crew XP just by playing, but the math changes depending on your mode:

  • Realistic and Simulator: It’s roughly 1 crew XP for every 100 RP you earn on that specific ship.
  • Arcade: You get 3 crew XP for every 100 RP, but it gets split across all your available crews.

Arcade looks better on paper, but it dilutes your progress. If you’re trying to max out one specific ship, Realistic is the way to go. If you’re impatient and have Golden Eagles to burn, you can just buy points in the Accelerated Training tab. Don’t buy them one by one, though – the 1,000 GE bundle gives you a massive 75% bonus compared to the base rate. Naval crews cap at level 100. Just a heads-up: the early levels are cheap, but those final tiers get incredibly expensive.

Qualifications: Expert and Ace

Expert and Ace qualifications graphic

Raw skill points are only half the battle. You need qualifications to actually hit peak performance:

  • Basic: The starting point. No bonuses here.
  • Expert: You buy this with Silver Lions once your crew hits a certain level. It costs exactly what the ship cost to buy. This gives you a +3 level (30%) boost to your main skills.
  • Ace: You can pay GE for this or just grind it out by playing that specific ship a ton. It adds another +2 levels (20%) on top of Expert.

To actually max a skill, you need level 5 research plus the Ace qualification to hit the effective level 10. Without these, you’re just leaving performance on the table.

The Skill Categories

Naval skill categories overview

There are six sections to worry about:

  • Ship Commander: Buffs everything else and keeps your crew count up.
  • Observers: How far away you spot planes, ships, and torpedoes.
  • Engine Room: How well you drive and how often you catch fire.
  • Gunners: Reload speeds and AI aim.
  • Damage Control: Fixing leaks and putting out fires.
  • Logistical Services: Hangar repairs (mostly).

Every Naval Skill Explained

Ship Commander

Leadership
This buffs every other crew member by up to 5%. It stacks with everything else, so even though it’s expensive (4,021 XP to max), it’s worth grabbing early for that multiplicative boost.

Crew Interchangeability
This is huge. In War Thunder, your ship stops working when too many people die. This skill lowers that “death threshold” and keeps your ship combat-effective even after taking heavy hits. It’s the difference between staying in the fight and becoming a floating target.

Radio Communication
Mostly for Arcade. It shows enemies on the map when allies spot them. If you’re a Realistic main, don’t even bother with this until the end.

Observers

Air Targets Detection Distance
Stock detection is 7.5 km; maxed is 10 km. That extra 2.5 km gives you just enough time to actually point your AA guns at a dive bomber before it ruins your day.

Enemy Torpedoes Detection Distance
Let’s be real: in Realistic, going from 9m to 13m detection is basically useless. If a torpedo is 13 meters away, you’re already dead. It’s slightly better in Arcade (up to 100m), but generally, this is a low-priority dump.

Engine Room

Ship Control
This makes your ship actually responsive. We’re talking about cutting rudder and engine lag from 5.44 seconds down to 4.05. When you’re trying to dodge a salvo, that second and a half is life or death.

Fire Prevention
Simple: it stops fires from starting in the engine room. Prevention is always better than trying to put one out while getting shot at.

Gunners

Main Caliber Reload Speed
This is the most important stat for winning fights. You can drop a 7.8-second reload down to 6 seconds flat. That’s a 30% buff to your damage output. If you aren’t leveling this, you’re losing.

AAA Gunner Accuracy
Big catch here: this only works for AI-controlled guns. If you like to hop into the AA seat and shoot down planes yourself, this skill does literally nothing for you.

Damage Control

Unwatering Time & Fire Extinguishing
Flooding and fires are what actually kill you in naval. Maxing these out makes you 30% faster at pumping water and putting out flames. If you want to be “that guy” who refuses to sink, max these.

Recommended priority order image

Bluewater (Big Ships)

  1. LeadershipThe force multiplier.
  2. Crew Interchangeability – Keeps you alive longer.
  3. Fire Extinguishing – Because fires are brutal.
  4. Fire Prevention – Stop the fires before they start.
  5. Breach Repair & Unwatering – Essential for not sinking.
  6. Ship Control – Makes the ship feel less like a brick.
  7. Main Caliber Reload – More shells = more wins.

Pro Tip: Don’t try to max one skill to level 5 immediately. It’s way more efficient to get the important ones to level 2 or 3 first, then circle back. The XP cost for those final levels is insane, and you’ll get more value by spreading the points around early on.

Coastal Fleet (Small Boats)

Coastal boats already start with high crew effectiveness, so Interchangeability isn’t as urgent. Focus on Reload Speed and Damage Control first. You’re fragile, so you need to kill them before they kill you.

The Bottom Line

The bottom line on naval crews

The damage control trio (Extinguishing, Breaches, Unwatering) gives you a combined 30% survivability boost. Pair that with a 30% faster reload, and you’re playing a completely different game than someone with a stock crew. Stop ignoring your observers and gunners – invest the points, get the Expert qualification with your Silver Lions, and you’ll actually start enjoying Naval.
