Sea of Thieves World Events Guide July 2026

Sea of Thieves

Pull up the map and check the horizon – there’s always something going down. World Events are the heart of Sea of Thieves, and knowing what each one pays out is what separates the legends from the cannon fodder. I’ve broken down everything worth your time so you can stop guessing and start grinding.

What Are World Events?

world event sky marker

Basically, these are the game’s way of shouting that there’s serious gold up for grabs. Only one major World Event can be active on a server at a time. This has been the rule since patch 2.6.3.1 to keep things from getting too cluttered. You’ll spot them by looking for massive markers in the sky – skull clouds, ship-shaped mists, or glowing tornadoes. The only outlier is the Kraken, which has no sky marker. It just shows up when no other event is active, usually right when you’re trying to get somewhere in a hurry. Then you’ve got emergent encounters like Megalodons and Skeleton Ships. These play by their own rules and can spawn even if a World Event is already active. Nothing ruins a fort run like a random Skelly Ship pulling up to pepper your hull while you’re busy with waves. Finally, there are player-activated raids. You launch these from the Captain’s Table, and they run alongside whatever else is happening on the server.

Fort of the Damned and Legend of the Veil are in their own league. You have to prep for these before they even start. The Veil is also locked behind Pirate Legend status, while standard events are fair game for anyone brave enough to sail into them.

Skeleton Fort

Skeleton Fort exterior

The classic. You’ve seen the green-eyed skull cloud a thousand times. It stays up for about 30 minutes if nobody touches it.

How It Works

Before you even step foot on the island, use your ship’s cannons to clear the fort’s towers. It saves you a lot of headache (and planks) while you’re trying to park.

The fight goes like this:

  1. Waves 1 – 12: Standard skeletons.
  2. Boss Wave 1: A Skeleton Captain (drops a Villainous Skull).
  3. Boss Wave 2: An Ashen Key Master and Guardian. You’ll get a key and a map to an Ashen Chest.
  4. Final Wave: One of three Skeleton Lords. Kill them to get the Stronghold Key.
  • Pro tip: That vault stays locked as long as the key is on the server. If another crew swipes your key, they swipe your loot.

Loot Breakdown

The Good Stuff:

  • Stronghold Key, Skull, and Chests
  • Ashen Key + Chest combo
  • Mermaid Gems and Gunpowder Barrels

If you’re at Molten Sands Fortress, you’ll also find a Chest of Rage in the vault. It’s a nice bonus for dealing with the volcanoes.

Fort of Fortune

Fort of Fortune vault treasure

This is the Skeleton Fort’s much meaner older brother. Look for the cracked red skull and listen for that deep horn sound. It’s a longer, harder fight, but the vault is actually cracked.

Structure – 18 Waves

  • Waves 1 – 15: Standard waves, but you’ll hit clusters of Skeleton Captains every few rounds.
  • Wave 16: A Skeleton Lord.
  • Wave 17: Two Skeleton Lords at once.
  • Wave 18: An Ashen Lord. This is the big one. They drop the Fort of Fortune Key and an Ashen Winds Skull.

Vault Rewards

This is why people fight over these:

  • Chest of Legends (Athena loot!)
  • Chest of Fortune (Exclusive to this event)
  • Athena Kegs and Crates
  • A massive pile of Stronghold and Captain’s loot

There’s no on-demand version for this, so if you see it, drop everything and go.

Reaper Fortress

Reaper Fortress sky marker

Look for the dark skull with the hat and red eyes. This fort is being hit by the Dark Brethren, so expect Phantoms and Ghost Ships to join the party.

Structure – 15 Waves

You’ll fight Skeletons, Phantoms, and deal with Ghost Ships bombarding the island. On Wave 8, look for the Master of Arms. Kill him to get a Skull of Arms, which unlocks a weapon cache on the fort filled with kegs and special ammo.

The final boss drops a Stronghold Key. Don’t forget the traps built into the fort – they have a 60-second cooldown, so use them to thin out the waves.

Skeleton Fleet and Fleet of Fortune

battle with a skeleton fleet

These happen entirely on the water. If you aren’t confident with your cannons, you’re going to have a bad time.

Skeleton Fleet (Green Ship Cloud)

You’ll face three waves of Skeleton Ships. The final wave has a Captain’s Galleon. Sink that specific ship to end the event. It drops a ton of Skeleton Captain’s Chests and Ritual Skulls.

Fleet of Fortune (Red Ship Cloud)

Same deal, but harder. The big prize here is the Chest of Fortune dropped by the final ship. Since you can’t start this on-demand, it’s always a high-priority target.

Ghost Fleet / Burning Blade

Burning Blade ghost ship

Marker: A thin green tornado.

You’ll fight through four waves of Ghost Ships. They’re fragile but they hit hard. The final wave features the Burning Blade. Sink it to get the Captain Skull of the Damned and a Cannonball Crate of the Damned (which lets you fire those cool ghostly wraith balls).

Ashen Winds

Ashen Winds boss

Marker: A massive red tornado.

You’ll fight one of four Ashen Lords. It’s a three-phase boss fight that gets more explosive as it goes. Use the throwing knives – they actually shred these guys.

The Prize: The Ashen Winds Skull. You can sell it for a decent chunk of gold, or use it as a literal flamethrower to torch other players and their ships. Just remember: using it as a weapon lowers its sell value.

Fort of the Damned (Raid)

Fort of the Damned approach

You have to start this one yourself. It’s the ultimate “come fight me” signal on the server.

How to Start It

  1. Get the 6 Flames of Fate: You need to die in specific ways (fire, poison, lightning, etc.) to collect different colored lantern lights.
  2. Get a Ritual Skull: Or just use a Skull of Destiny to skip the lantern hunt.
  3. Light the statues at the fort and place the skull.

The vault is loaded with Athena and Reaper loot, plus a bunch of Mega Kegs. Experienced crews “stack” this event, doing it over and over without clearing the vault to build up millions in gold.

The Kraken

Kraken attacking a ship

No cloud, no warning. The water just turns black and your ship stops.

  • Sloop: You only need to kill 2-3 tentacles.
  • Galleon: You’re looking at 7-8.

Pro tip: Use the Trident of Dark Tides. It kills tentacles way faster than cannons. If you’re in a hurry, you can just sail straight until you hit blue water again, but you’ll miss out on the Kraken meat and loot.

Strategies and Tips

ship battle tactics

  • Server Hopping: If the sky is empty or the event sucks, use the Captain’s Table to “Dive” to a new voyage. It’ll put you on a fresh server with a different event.
  • Stacking Kegs: For Fort of the Damned, hide your kegs in a safe spot. You can use them to instant-kill the boss on your next run.
  • Prioritize the Captain: In fleet events, don’t waste all your wood on the small ships. Focus the Captain’s ship to end the fight and secure the best loot.
  • Check for Tuckers: Always, always check the corners of the vault and the island towers. People love to hide and wait for you to do the hard work.

Gold Farming (The Real Numbers)

The Gold Hoarder statue

Method Est. Per Hour
Sea Forts / Encampments ~250k
Burning Blade (Captain) ~300k
Stacking World Events (Reaper 5) ~400k
Fort of the Damned (Optimized) ~500k+

If you want the most gold for your time, stacking Fort of the Damned is still king, but it’s also the highest risk. If you want something chill, Sea Forts are consistent and easy. Choose your poison and get sailing.
